Testing and mock-ups

Testing and mock-ups2020-01-31T08:11:59+00:00

In manufacturing and design, a mock-up is a scale or full-size model of a design or device, used for teaching, demonstration, design evaluation, promotion, and other purposes.

A mock-up is a prototype if it provides at least part of the functionality of a system and enables testing of a design. Mock-ups are used by designers mainly to acquire feedback from users and it address the idea captured in a popular engineering one-liner: “You can fix it now on the drafting board with an eraser or you can fix it later on the construction site with a sledge hammer”.

Cladding and Curtain wall testing can be undertaken to verify design criteria, for compliance and for investigatory purposes. Performing the following tests will set the assurance of the integrity of the Curtain wall design and if the prototype is properly engineered and has checked all necessary requirements for local and international standards.

Off-Site testing: Performance mock-up (PMU)

– Air permeability.
– Water tightness under static pressure.
– Water tightness under dynamic pressure.
– Hose test.
– Structural performance under design load (SLS).
– Structural performance under extreme design load (ULS).
– Impact resistance (external and Internal).
– Operating forces.
– Burglar resistance under static loading.
– Burglar resistance under dynamic loading.
– Burglar resistance under manual attempts.
– Seismic movements.

On-Site testing

– Hose testing.
– Spray bar testing.
– Impact testing.
– Barrier testing.

Visual Mock-ups (VMU)

– Analysis of materials and aspect.
– Provides a better final design.
– Can act as a benchmark.
– Tests the functionality and installation sequence.
